Research & Knowledge Transfer Office

The Research & Knowledge Transfer (R&KT) Office is one of the five core administrative streams within the College. It encompasses three primary teams; Research Development, Research Management and Technology Transfer. Each team includes College and School support, with an integrated structure including a central set of offices in the main Medical School Building (WG37-WG39), School located offices/individuals and a wider network incorporating other related staff within the College, University and externally, particularly our NHS R&D colleagues.

The R&KT Office provides:

  • strategic, planning and development guidance for all aspects of the College's Research & Knowledge Transfer strategy and associated matters;
  • an essential interface with relevant corporate services, particularly the University Research and Commercial Services (RCS) the Research Accountants in Finance and the technology transfer arm of the University, Alta Innovations Ltd;
  • the first point of contact, both internally and externally, for advice and assistance with all research-related issues;
  • research funding reference material and information for all College staff to access.


The R&KT Office is under the academic leadership of Professor Jon Frampton, College Director of Research & Knowledge Transfer, and the administrative management of Dr Kate Bishop, Head of Research & Knowledge Transfer, with dedicated secretarial and administrative support to the Head of R&KT from Ms Geraldine Biggerton.

Kate is a UoB alumnus and was previously the College's Research Business Development Manager. The primary remit of the Head of Research and Knowledge Transfer is to establish, implement and manage research strategy, including maximising translational aspects of research across the College and managing the existing research portfolio, facilitating an increase in research in future years. As Head of Research & Knowledge Transfer she supports interdisciplinary, inter-College and regional initiatives, facilitates the strategic planning process, liaises with research sponsors and is accountable for all the activity within the R&KT Office.

Geraldine is a University of Warwick alumnus, and provides crucial secretarial support across the wide range of activities of the R&KT Office, with specific responsibility for managing the diary of the Head of Research & Knowledge Transfer and increasing involvement in project-based activity.


Research Development Team

The Research Development Team provides strategic input, support for research funding application, approval, implementation and management processes, and includes a growing team of specialised administrative/research management staff, including:

BUPA Translational Research Manager: Dr Eliot Marston

Eliot has a PhD in leukaemia research from the UoB CRUK Institute of Cancer Studies, and has significant research funding and technology transfer experience. His primary remit is as the Translational Research Manager for the developing Centre for Obesity Research at the University of Birmingham, in which he is responsible for driving new collaborative, interdisciplinary research initiatives, developing and assisting with funding proposals, liaising with internal and external partners and the promotion of internal research excellence to an external audience. As a core part of his primary remit, Eliot also provides Senior Research Facilitator support across the School of Clinical & Experimental Medicine's portfolio of activity, assisting with expert advice relating to funding opportunities and proposal development. He is also working on the complex array of metrics relating to research activities across the School/College to provide improved management information to both PIs and Senior Management.

Catherine, a UoB alumnus, assists the Head of Research and Knowledge Transfer with administering the College's research portfolio, including coordinating research governance processes across the College, coordinating activities and maintaining the website of the Human Disease, Diagnosis and Treatment (HDDT) Collaborative Research Network (CRN) and acting as the first point of contact internally and externally for research funding queries. Catherine coordinates several College-wide funding initiatives and provides relevant project support for complex proposals. Catherine has also developed and promotes the Research Forum within the College, maintains the R&KT Office website, and provides administrative and organisational support across R&KT Office activities.


Research Management Team

The Research Management Team is lead by Mrs Karen Carter, Research Manger, who has primary responsibility for coordination of research training and development across the College/Schools and providing a professional research monitoring and analysis function to support College Research & Knowledge Transfer strategy development.

Karen joined the University in 2001 and worked in the School of C&EM until January 2009 when she commenced her current role. Karen has overall administrative responsibility for the College Graduate School, for research-related training and development support activity and the provision of a professional research management function, including metrics support, for the College. Karen will also be heavily involved in College preparations for the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Karen is directly supported by the Postgraduate Clerical Officer and Research Officer (to be appointed), and coordinates relevant support activity across the Schools.

Postgraduate Clerical Officer: Mrs Niki Windridge

As the Postgraduate Clerical Officer, Niki deals with all postgraduate research applications for the five Schools and looks after the Graduate School website.She coordinates venues and catering for examinations and acts as secretarial support for Graduate Studies Committee.  Niki provides support directly to the College Research Manager.


Technology Transfer Team

The Technology Transfer Team id led by Kate Bishop, Research Business Development Manager. The Team promotes the translational aspects of research across the College, and provides support to all Schools in developing and exploiting the commercial potential of research.

MRC DPFS Officer: Dr Lindsay Smith

Lindsay has a PhD in neurodegenerative research from the College and has worked within the R&KT Office for the last two years as a Medici Technology Transfer Fellow. As MRC DPFS Project Officer, Lindsay is responsible for co-ordinating funding applications and project management for the MRC Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme. Lindsay continues to offer support to academics for technology transfer activities and works closely with the Research Business Development Manager, Technology Transfer Officer and Alta Innovations.

Science City Translational Medicine Project Manager: Dr Claire Potter

Claire gained her PhD in biological sciences and health from the National Pollen and Aerobiology Unit (NPARU) at the University of Worcester. She then completed her Medici fellowship within the Institute of Health at the University of Worcester before working for 4 years as NPARU's Business Development and Project Manager. As Science City Translational Medicine Project Manager, Claire provides management of the collaborative Advantage West Midlands funded Translational Medicine project between the Universities of Warwick and Birmingham, within the Birmingham Science City initiative.

Technology Transfer Officer: Dr Rachel Colman

Rachel has a PhD in Immunology from the College and worked as a post-doc in the School of Cancer Sciences prior to moving to the R&KT Office. In her new role as Technology Transfer Officer, Rachel will provide practical support for academics, to identify new intellectual property and to support the development of commercial opportunities, through filing patent applications, preparing business plans and sourcing commercial development funding. She will provide general support to academics in the College with specific emphasis on promoting technology transfer within the Schools of Dentistry and Health and Population Sciences.

Yvonne provides crucial secretarial support across the wide range of activities of the R&KT Office, but is increasingly focused on supporting the business development work of the technology Transfer Team and providing direct support to the Research Business Development manager.
