The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) Association is holding its biennial meeting at the University of Birmingham UK in 2010. The purpose of this meeting is to promote and stimulate the exchange of ideas, knowledge and research materials among medical and life science researchers who study EBV and its related diseases. The conference will be attended by approximately 400 delegates from around the world. The EBV Conference is the only event of its kind in the UK. Becoming a sponsor of the EBV Conference will reinforce your company's position as a leading player in cancer research and treatment, and provide you with access to high quality audiences - including eminent scientists and clinicians, and the new generation of PhD students and research fellows. Our major sponsors are recognised with widespread visibility at the Conference, including branding opportunities, premier exhibition stands, the best pages for brochure adverts and acknowledgement on the Conference website. Background on EBV Epstein-Barr virus is a herpes-virus that infects all human populations, with a prevalence of over 90% in adults. Primary infection usually occurs in early childhood and is asymptomatic, whereas delayed infection can cause infectious mononucleosis. Importantly, EBV is linked to the development of some cancers, which include several types of lymphoma (e.g. Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and carcinoma (nasopharyngeal, gastric carcinoma). Despite intensive research, EBV remains one of the most successful viral parasites known to man, and a significant cause of illness and death. Investigating how the virus interacts with the host to cause cancer is critical if we are to better understand how these tumours develop, while at the same time designing better approaches to prevent and treat patients with EBV-associated cancers. As well as reporting ground-breaking new research, the conference will be also be the occasion of the retirement of Alan Rickinson FRS, who for many years has pioneered research in the EBV. In honour of Professor Rickinson’s retirement there will be a talk by Professor Harald zur Hausen who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2008 for his work on human papillomaviruses and cervical cancer. |
